BASS
The bass
fishing from Poole can be very productive with many varied
venues & techniques from offshore drifting,
anchoring reefs with live mackerel and very light spinning. The best rig for
Bass when at anchor is a simple running ledger with a trace of
around 3/4 foot of 20/30lb monofilament line and 2/0 to 6/0 hook
depending on the size of bait, the same is fine for drifting as
well if fishing with a live bait if that's not available though
rubber shads can be just as effective I fined either blue or
Opel (white) to be the best colours. Bass
fishing normally starts in earnest around the end of May when the
chance of good numbers of small mackerel increases. As the shoals of
small fish thin out over the summer the chance of a double increases,
after the end of September it becomes increasingly harder to catch
bait, but if the weather is fair we sometimes get good numbers of bass
right up to Christmas. The best tides for bass are big ones. From 1st Jan
2018 European law is no take for Bass. The minimum size for bass is still 36cm however I like to keep to the
NFSA size which is 42cm and I also like to see fish over 8lb go back,
these are not boat rules just guidelines to help save these magnificent
fish.
