Miscellaneous
still doesn't cover all the species we catch, currently the species
count is 49. Here are just some of the lesser but interesting ones and
some common ones, first pouting & dog fish sometimes can be a
bit too common. Mackerel mainly caught only for bait and
garfish can be great fun on light float tackle. John dory's are great,
but so far only ever caught by accident, gurnards can be very common at
times and are normally caught by accident while fishing for either rays
or flatties, but the are very good to eat. The same goes for red
mullet. Wrasse are also caught by accident mostly while fishing for
bream but I think they are a very much under rated sport fish that can
be caught to a good size and in large number's on very light tackle.
Whiting are a very good eating fish and can be abundant in the cod
season. Shad are again always caught by accident mostly on feathers,
they are protected and must be returned immediately. Last but by no
means least the gilt head bream can only, as far as I know, be caught
in the harbour so, if you don't have a go for them, you'll never catch
one.
