There are a few different
species of ray which
we
catch from Poole, smalleyed and blondes tend to be on sand, undulates
spotted and thornbacks on mixed or rough ground. Their range is
extensive, from just off the shore line, right out to mid channel. A
lot of people think ray fishing is boring but I love it, inshore you
can use very light tackle to catch fish up to 15lb+, where offshore the
blondes can be especially
large
and very powerful. rays. Some people do like skate
wings but I don't like to see female or large male rays retained. I have
to say this is a rule, all female rays are carrying eggs and I won't see
them killed.
Fishing for Ray couldn't be simpler and they
are an ideal target for the beginner. A running ledger with 4
foot flowing trace of 30lb /60lb mono size 2 to 4/0 strongish
hook, all baits work for Rays with fresh Mackerel fillet,
Sand Eel and Squid and Worm cocktail being the best adding an
upsidedown Muppet also seems to help.
